Dia De Los Muertos Dollhouse

Journal Entry: Wed Nov 4, 2009, 7:33 AM

Photobucket" />

I just celebrated the Day of the Dead in my Mortuary Science Department by making sugar skulls and punched paper flags. Living in San Antonio, the expression of Hispanic culture is pervasive and I often find some similarities with my own Italian heritage. Anyway, I was searching for dark items on Etsy and came across this fantastic dollhouse by 'artistmuerta' whose store can be found at [link] . The "Dia De Los Muertos Dollhouse" is to die for!!! Multiple rooms richly decorated with marigolds, skulls, and so many tidbits I'm drooling.

Photobucket" />

Photobucket" />

It's a mixed media piece in assemblage style with most of the furniture in what looks to be 1:12 scale but some decorations like the wallpaper a bit larger. It gives a bit of vertigo and the sense of the otherworldly. I'm totally fascinated!

The artist describes her work thusly:

"A project that was a complete joy to create - a Dia De Los Muertos Dollhouse. I started with a raw wood dollhouse frame, added handmade wallpaper in red and gold, decorative wood elements of scrolls, flowers and molding painted in black and gold. The roof was finished with hand-aged copper foil, sealed to protect the patina.

The largest room features a gold, flowered and jeweled Dia De Los Muertos altar with Lady of Guadalupe statues, flowers, santos candles, brass candlesticks, cross, hand-painted sugar skulls and a crown. The walls are decorated with a family portrait, other portraits, pictures and paintings, brass milagros, stars, a jeweled cross, ornate mirror, and candles. The familia sits vigil over a jeweled coffin, with a velvet couch and table with candelabra.
The familia was created out of wire armatures, polyclay and various bits and bobs of fabric, ribbon and jewels."

TAKE A PEEK IN MY CAULDRON...

Welcome to Cauldron Craft Miniatures! I'm Grimdeva, a miniature and mixed media artist out of Texas. I make fine Fantasy & Spooky miniatures for the magically inclined dollhouse. I usually work in 1:12 scale, where 1 inch equals 1 foot. Lately, I have also expanded my line into the larger playscale sizes for 8" - "16 fashion dolls. I regularly work in these themes: Wizard's magic, Egyptian Revival, Victorian Steampunk, Country Witch, Gothic Elegance, Cryptozoology, and Dark Fairy. My magical furniture and accessories are sure to please the most wizened wizard and fickle of fey!

ARTISTIC APPROACH:

My fantasy miniatures are handmade and often one of a kind (OOAK)! I am influenced by assemblage style and will often incorporate recylced materials, found objects, toy parts, natural fibers, and jewelry findings. I work in various grades of wire and wood. I use a variety of clays: miliput, epoxy, sculpy, and paperclay. I love texture and use several layers of spackling, crackling, glazes, gilding, inks, acrylics, and textured sprays. I'm always on the look out for new materials but conscious of maintaining a consistent feel in my work.
-------------------------------------------------------
I also love Living Dead Dolls, Pullip and Mini Pullip dolls, Wizard of Oz Tonner dolls, and BeGoth dolls. I've been making a lot of stuff for them too, including a spooky cafe and a gothic living room. Pics coming soon, promise.

Do all witches go through a 'day of the dead' phase? I'm German but with a lot of Native American ties. Still for some reason this year (I'm 42) I've been almost obsessed with skulls and day of the dead items. I've been really into crafting those sort of things lately. I wonder if it's a phase--or are more of us feeling drawn to it this year?

:icongrimdeva:
Possibly they do... I'm in Texas however, so I'm inundated with this type of Hispanic imagery and its just part of the local flavor. I went to an arts and crafts workshop about El dia de los muertos this week and found out that the bright colors and glitter are suppossed to attract the visiting spirits of loved ones. I think many westerners are interested in it because it is sort of like Halloween but without the connotations of childishness or evil that Hollywood has tainted Samhain and Hallo's Eve with. Give em time! As far as Native american traditions go, I've spent quite a bit of time with Lakota and Dakota families at Northern style PowWows and they do not like any images of skeletons or death usually. It depends on the tribal tradition. The Aztec and other mesoamerican traditions on the other hand fully embrace it and this is apparent in modern Mexican practices. I don't think of my Mexican honey as an Aztec usually but that's what he's descended from... and Comanche.
